Eligibility for Residents

Apartments in Brigham Young University-Hawaii Campus Married Student Housing (TVA) are available to married students, single parents with dependent children under the age of 18. Single parents must have legal custody of their child/children to be eligible for residence at TVA. Immediate family is defined as the student's spouse and unmarried children under the age of 18. Parents, brothers, sisters and other relatives or guests of the tenant are not permitted to live with the family.

The tenant and/or spouse must be a a full-time student at BYUH during the Fall and Winter Semesters as well as either Spring or Summer Term. Full-time is defined as a minimum academic load of 12 credit hours for international students and 9 credit hours for U.S. citizens each semester, with 6 credit hours for international students and 4 credit hours for U.S. citizens during either Spring or Summer terms. If the tenant will not be attending school during the year the spouse must attend. Appeals for exceptions to this policy must be submitted, in writing, to the Housing Office.

The University will provide housing to full-time students, upon availability, for up to a maximum of 5 years. When the married couple are both students, the spouse with the least years in Housing determines the remaining years of eligibility (i.e. if a student with four years remaining eligibility should stop being a full-time student, the spouse who has two years of eligibility remaining would determine the remaining years in University Housing, provided he or she remains a full-time student.) (Under these circumstances, housing eligibility for married student housing is transferable from each spouse one time only.)

TVA housing will not be available to advanced standing students or graduates. However, if the spouse is a full time student and has remaining eligibility for married student housing, the apartment will be transferred to the spouse's name and the family will be allowed to remain in TVA until the spouse's eligibility has expired.
