There are 3 other things that need to be addressed here.

Email Alias Addresses

SPAM / Junk Mail

Forwarding Email

1) Email Alias Addresses.

Your Email address would be in the form of CES_Net_ID@byuh.edu. An Email Alias address is also created automatically in the form of Firstname.Lastname@byuh.edu. You may look up this Alias Address by logging into http://my.byuh.edu, then, on the left-hand side of the page, click on the link "Peoplesoft Human Resources". Then click on the "Self Service" -> "Campus Personal Information" -> "Email Addresses". At this page, you may also set your Personal or Other Email addresses, such as @yahoo.com or @hotmail.com. You may also set your "Preferred" Email address, which means the address you prefer people to send email to. If, for some reason, you are not given an Alias address (Firstname.Lastname@byuh.edu) - probably because someone already has the same firstname and lastname as you, then you can request another email alias by contacting mis@byuh.edu.

2) SPAM / Junk Mail

If you are experiencing an overload of SPAM or Junk Mail, this segment of information will be helpful to you. First, let us define SPAM and Junk Mail. For our purposes, let us define SPAM as: Unsolicited Email that contains vulgar / misleading or advertising information from unknown companies/people that give you no opportunity to remove (or unsubscribe) your email address from further email communication. We will define Junk Mail as: Unwanted Email containing advertisements from known (and possible unkown) companies that give you an opportunity to remove your email address from further email communication (through a link or some other form). Therefore, Junk Mail would be defined as email sent to you because you were somehow subscribed (whether you were aware or unaware) to their email list. You may be subscribed to these lists unknowingly because of your browsing habits.

By understanding the definitions of SPAM and Junk Mail above, I will explain how we can minimize your unwanted Email. 1) Stopping Junk Mail is your responsibility. Our Email system will not and cannot block Junk Mail, as defined above, because you were subscribed to their email list and, therefore, the email is legitimate. The company would also be legitimate because they would give you the opportunity to unsubscribe your email address from their subscription list. These types of email could be advertisements from CompUSA, Wal-Mart, etc. The best way to stop receiving email from these places is to search towards the bottom of each email for information about unsubscribing your email address from list. They usually say, "If you want to discontinue receiving email, then Click Here or reply to this email with the word 'Unsubscribe' in the subject". If you follow their instructions, you would properly remove yourself from receiving any more Junk Mail from them. This process could be painful if you have many emails of this type, but the time would be worth spending to get rid of future junk. Again, our System would not block these emails because they are legitimate coming from legitimate companies. 2) Blocking SPAM is our reponsibilty. If you look into an email and they mention no way to unsubscribe your email address from further email communication, then this is SPAM. We are doing our best to block this type of email. Currently, we have two services that block SPAM. The first is RBL lookups. This system will block any email coming from a certain address known to send out SPAM. This method blocks half the email we receive daily. The second system is Anti-Spam filtering. This method uses an external company's filtering software that searches email as they come in for certain SPAM-like attributes, the email is then given a score. If the score is 50 or above, the email is marked as Spam or Junk Mail, and is then forwarded automatically into your "Junk Mail" folder. Sometimes good email is marked as Junk Mail. It is your responsibility to look into your Junk Mail folder if you were expecting an email and nothing came to your inbox. We made sure that anything from @byuh.edu is not marked as Junk Mail.

After all is said and done, you will still receive Spam in your inbox (but with a much lesser degree). We cannot block 100% of spam. Spam continues to evolve and find ways and other places from which to send spam to email addresses - like viruses. We just do our best in blocking as much spam as possible. We hope that you receive nothing more than 1 or 2 spam emails per week or longer. If you are receiving more than a few spam emails (not junk mail) per day, please follow these steps: 1) Forward your the SPAM email to this address: spam@byuh.edu - we will monitor this mailbox to enhance our blocking capabilities. 2) Log into webmail, select the spam message, then click on the "Report as Spam" button.

3) Forwarding your email

Once you leave the University, we will remove your user account and mailbox. If you would like to forward your existing email before your mailbox is removed, please contact mis@byuh.edu. We have the capability of forwarding existing email in one batch to a specified off campus email address.
